HAVE A FUN AUTUMN WEEKEND
What are your plans for this weekend?
You’ll never guess what we are doing tomorrow. So I’ll just tell you.
We are going camping. Yes – camping, in Dubai. Who’d have thought. In the middle of the desert. The sandy, dry, deserted Middle Eastern desert. Who’d have thought, hey? I’ll let you know how that one goes, some time next week. Unless we get lost. Or stuck in a sand dune.
It’s Eid holiday here this week, so the schools are closed. The other day during my print making course, one of the ladies there said she couldn’t wait for the holidays. From overhearing her talking previously, I knew she was currently studying. I had been admiring her style – she wore bright red lipstick, and funky arty type clothes, was producing some insane prints and spoke art talk in the coolest way. Like I used to way back when. So I thought I’d be really cool too, by saying something supercool which I really didn’t mean, but thought would sound, you know, SUPERCOOLWOW. It came out something like;
“Yeah, uhm, holiday, huh. Well, actually holidays means MY KID is off school, so you know, gosh, super busy and stress and stuff.” I added some serious eye rolling, just to get my point across.
She looked up at me and replied ” Both my children are off school, too, but I kinda like having them home with me.”
She has kids? Super cool artsy student with bright red lipstick has kids? She’s a Mum? Gah. I so badly wanted to retract my stupid uncool statement about dreading the school holidays, because I really didn’t mean it, I love having my kids around me and how nice to not have to rush in the mornings for a whole week, and aaahhhh really I DO LOVE MY KIDS, I was just trying to be cool.
Two things we can learn from this people:
Never try to be cool by saying something you don’t mean. You can’t take it back, and for sure you WILL feel like a twit.
Cool people who study art can also be parents. People who are parents can still chase after and achieve their dreams. You can be both. You can fit into several boxes. Who’d have thought, hey.
Here are some great links for you to enjoy while I head off into the desert:
